Students at St. Andrew's Catholic School are active learners who demonstrate
Christian attitudes and strong school spirit.
Celebrations, involvement in
extra-curricular events, "buddy reading," partnerships in learning and Spirit Days are examples of how we encourage enthusiastic student participation in
the school community.
We shall strengthen the partnership of home, school, parish and community for the educational enhancement of all children, based on faith, self-worth and unconditional love.
Built in 1963, and expanded in subsequent years. St. Andrew's features an attractive library, computer lab, gymnasium, French classroom, a small nature corner, a grotto dedicated to our Mother Mary. As well, a large yard includes a basketball court, softball diamond, soccer field, swings and a creative playground structure. The school is well maintained, clean and attractive.
St. Andrew's has an enrollment of 98 students from
Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. Parents at St. Andrew's are involved, visible and active on the School Council, and in raising funds for educational activities. For example, our parents raised funds and built our
beautiful creative playground structure. Such parent support ensures St. Andrew's remains a Catholic Community School.
St. Andrew's is a faith filled community. An active parish
liaison plans monthly masses in co-operation with the school. Living rosaries, Stations of the Cross and paraliturgies are ongoing demonstrations of our faith.
At
Christmas, cookies are baked, packaged and distributed by children to senior citizens. Cards and letters are created by children and sent to peacekeepers who are on missions outside of Canada.
The Killaloe Food Bank, which operates out of our church basement, is strongly supported by various projects such as food donations at
Thanksgiving and Advent masses and fundraising admissions to seasonal dances.
One class project involves students, parents and community members who donate money for
the needy during Advent. The children prepare a grocery list, shop at a local grocery store and transport the food to the food bank for distribution.
During Lent, students support the Holy Childhood Association, as well as our Twin School in the Dominican Republic. Letters and gifts exchanged between schools personalize our donations and give students a direct human connection with the benefactors of their generosity.
First Communion and Reconciliation are annual celebrations, with Confirmation celebrated every second year.
Each classroom prays daily and utilizes a prayer center, as well as bi-weekly assemblies where we gather to pray as a school community. St. Andrew's and its students maintain a strong presence in our community. There are regular visits to watch seasonal changes at Killaloe's Station Park. And the downtown park is also a site for class picnics. The annual OPP/School Broomball Tournament is held at the outdoor rink, in conjunction with the Killaloe Winter Weekend. An annual Christmas Craft Sale, held in the Church basement coincides with the Killaloe Santa Claus Parade. Senior students learn the sport of curling from local club members who volunteer their time and club facilities. St. Andrew's hosts the July 1st Canada Day festivities, and the entire Killaloe and surrounding area enjoys fireworks and music at this "summer kick-off" party. The community values St. Andrew's Catholic School and supports school fund-raisers, attends school concerts and craft sales and promotes school activities. Students are encouraged to dress modestly, appropriately and present a neat and tidy appearance. They are expected to be attentive to their studies and courteous to others.
At St. Andrew's Catholic School, our staff works as a team to proactively encourage appropriate student behaviour by:
